New Memorial Park Bridge Dedicated to Wally Ohler and Local Veterans

unveilingIn honor of Veterans Day, the community gathered Nov. 11 at the newly constructed Memorial Park Bridge to honor servicemen and women, past and present, paying tribute to their service and sacrifices. The bridge was also to be dedicated to all our local veterans. Our Veterans Liaison, Walter "Wally" Ohler, who works tirelessly to ensure North Royalton veterans are remembered, honored and served, was surprised and overcome with emotion when he helped Ward 4 Councilman Jeremy Dietrich and Dawn Carbone-McDonald, North Royalton Ward 5 Councilwoman unveil the bridge's new plaque, which is actually now named the Walter Ohler Bridge on behalf of his unwavering efforts and the dedication of all veterans. Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz said the hope is that all who see and use the bridge view it as a very tangible symbol, bridging our gratefulness and veterans' service, which we hold in extreme regard and reverence. The families of these individuals endure so much when their loved one is away serving – the sleepless nights, the hours of endless worry, the stress of the distance. The Mayor said that’s why it’s important that we do all we can to ensure that their service is never in vain. That we remember all they do on our behalf and do all we can back home to show our appreciation and support.

Ohler Proclamation"Wally, we knew our bridge needed something more than just words. We wanted to capture what it means to serve and sacrifice, and we couldn’t think of a more deserving individual than you to personalize it. Someone who not only served his nation, but someone who has dedicated his life in service of fellow veterans. Thank you for everything you have done for our country, our community and our local heroes," the Mayor said during the unveiling.

We would like to thank VFW Auxiliary Post 3345, North Royalton Police Department's Honor Guard, State Rep. Tom Patton, City Council and the entire community for helping make this Veterans Day special. We are also greatly appreciative of Everlasting Memorials and Gifts for putting this plaque together for us on such short notice.
